Rest In Peace, Kevin Coogan, and Thanks So Much!

It is with great sad­ness that we report the pass­ing of the bril­liant Kevin Coogan at the age of 67. Kevin left us on 2/27/2020 in New York City. One of the sem­i­nal polit­i­cal intel­lects of our time, Kevin left us much to con­tem­plate and with which to engage. Most impor­tant of his many con­tri­bu­tions was his land­mark opus “Dream­er of the Day: Fran­cis Park­er Yock­ey and the Post­war Fas­cist Inter­na­tion­al,” the sub­ject of numer­ous inter­views and pro­grams fea­tur­ing lengthy text excerpts from the book. In addi­tion, we archived numer­ous arti­cles by Kevin includ­ing: “The Mys­te­ri­ous Achmed Huber: Friend to Hitler, Allah and Bin Laden?”; “Report on Islamists, the Far Right and Al Taqwa”; and “Achmed Huber, the Aval­on Gemein­schaft and the Swiss ‘New Right’ ”. Oth­er pro­grams detail the many focal points of Kev­in’s remark­able work. Numer­ous inter­views con­tain Kev­in’s insights into impor­tant, although lit­tle-known polit­i­cal dynam­ics.

In AFA#1, we high­light­ed Third Reich Finance Min­is­ter von Krosigk’s use of the term “Iron Cur­tain” in a Nazi pro­pa­gan­da broad­cast short­ly before the end of the war. Win­ston Churchill “bor­rowed” the phrase for use in his famous speech in Spring­field, Mis­souri, which enshrined it in the rhetor­i­cal lex­i­con of The Cold War. Prime Min­is­ter-elect Naren­dra Modi, with a polit­i­cal back­ground in a Hin­du nation­al­ist par­ty with strong fas­cist roots, is now in charge of the world’s sec­ond largest coun­try and the world’s largest democ­ra­cy. Naren­dra Modi belonged to the RSS, an orga­ni­za­tion with his­tor­i­cal and ide­o­log­i­cal affin­i­ty for Nazism and fas­cism, cap­i­tal­iz­ing on anti-Mus­lim fer­vor. An asso­ciate of RSS assas­si­nat­ed Mahat­ma Gand­hi.

With the nation and much of the world focused on the grue­some shoot­ings in New­town, Con­nect­cut, we revis­it the top­ic of the school­yard shoot­ings. In past pro­grams, we have not­ed that a num­ber of the [alleged] per­pe­tra­tors of the school shoot­ings have links to Nazi and white suprema­cist groups. A form of ter­ror­ism, these mas­sacres desta­bi­lize soci­ety, lead­ing to the pop­u­lar sen­ti­ment for “order.” Endorsed by some ele­ments of pop­u­lar cul­ture, the school­yard shoot­ings are func­tion­ing in a man­ner anal­o­gous to the Fritz Haar­mann inci­dent in Weimar Ger­many. That ser­i­al mur­der of more than a hun­dred juve­niles, whose corpses were butchered and baked into meat pies, dis­cred­it­ed the author­i­ties of Weimar Ger­many, help­ing to sow sen­ti­ment that would ben­e­fit the Nazis.
