FTR #587 Update on September 11 and Related Matters

Recorded February 25, 2007
MP3 Side 1 [1] | Side 2 [2]
REALAUDIO [3]

Introduction: Beginning with the subject of Sami al-Arian, the program sets forth the latest twist in the odyssey of this Islamic terrorist and political associate of George Bush. Acquitted of terrorism charges on a technicality, this GOP activist refused to testify before a grand jury about the IIIT, one of the institutions raided in the 3/20/2002 Operation Green Quest raids. Al-Arian’s attorneys say he fears for his life if he were to testify about the supposedly benign IIIT. Not surprisingly, Islamist elements and supportive elements in the so-called progressive political sector are hailing al-Arian as a political martyr. After chronicling yet another major GOP donor who is accused of financing terrorism, the program focuses on the misrepresentation of Islamofascist and terrorist elements and individuals as “moderate.” After supplementing discussion (from previous programs) of the growing confluence between so-called 9/11 Truthers and Holocaust deniers, the program notes an Indian intelligence report indicating that terrorists manipulate stock markets in order to generate funds. Concluding with information about the Carl Duisberg Gesellschaft (or Carl Duisberg Society in the United States), the broadcast notes that, in addition to having sponsored 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta’s travels in Germany and (possibly) the United States, the CDS is apparently involved with anthrax research in the U.S.

Program Highlights Include: Stanford University’s favorable presentation of a fiercely bigoted Turkish film that echoes the old “blood-libel” anti-Semitic lies; Muslim Brotherhood leader Tariq Ramadan’s association with the Dalai Lama (who maintains active contact with Islamists); Holocaust Denier Eric D. Williams’ participation in a recent 9/11 “Truth” conference in Arizona; 9/11 “Truth” figure Jim Fetzer’s glowing praise for neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier Eric Hufschmid; the official retraction of an article claiming that many of the 9/11 hijackers are still alive; the relationship between the Carl Duisberg Society and the establishment of the Fraunhofer USA laboratory at the University of Delaware.

1. Beginning with supplemental information about Sami al-Arian, the broadcast notes that he has refused to testify about the International Institute of Islamic Thought, one of the organizations busted on 3/20/2002 as part of Operation Green Quest. Al-Arian’s attorneys said that his life would be in danger if he testified! Now why would he be in any danger if the organization were as benign as al-Arian and his defenders maintain?! (For more about al-Arian, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 467 [4], 538 [5]. For more about Operation Green Quest, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 356 [6], 357 [7], 454 [8], 462 [9], 464 [10], 583 [11].) “A potentially key witness has refused to testify in the long-running investigation into whether Islamic charities in Northern Virginia were financing terrorist organizations, according to recently unsealed court documents. Former Florida professor Sami al-Arian declined to answer questions before a federal grand jury in Alexandria last month, according to documents unsealed in federal court in Tampa. Arian, who was acquitted in one of the nation’s highest-profile terrorism cases but then pleaded guilty to a single charge, believes his life would be in danger if he testified, his attorneys told a judge. Prosecutors want Arian to reveal what they believe are his ties to the International Institute of Islamic Thought, or IIIT, a Herndon think tank that is one of the key organizations under investigation. The probe, which federal officials have called the nation’s largest terrorism-financing investigation, is focused on a Herndon-based network of Muslim charities, businesses and think tanks. The Muslim charities deny any terrorist ties. . . .”
(“Witness Is Silent in Terror Probe: Ex-Professor Says Grand Jury Testimony Would Endanger Him” by Jerry Markon; The Washington Post; 11/14/2006; p. B05.) [12]

2. Filling in some background information about the al-Arian case, the program synopsizes details about the Operation Green Quest raids of 2002. “The investigation burst into public view more than four years ago when federal agents swarmed into homes and businesses in Herndon and elsewhere in Northern Virginia. They carted away 500 boxes of documents — from some of the most established Islamic organizations in the United States — that they believed contained evidence of an international terrorism financing network. . . . . No charges have been filed against the principals of the Herndon-based cluster of companies and charities that are at the center of the investigation, and their attorneys and some Muslims have labeled the raids a fishing expedition. Prosecutors in the U.S. attorney’s office in Alexandria have strongly defended the raids, saying during a 2004 court hearing that they would file charges against some or all of the Herndon-based network, possibly under racketeering statutes once used to target the Mafia.” (Idem.)

3. More about the Operation Green Quest raids of 3/20/2002 and al-Arian’s role in the investigation: “The investigation has spanned nearly half a decade, according to court documents and law enforcement officials, because it involves a complex trail of international transactions between corporations and related charitable entities. The government believes Arian could help untangle the money trail, court documents indicate. In an affidavit filed in support of the search warrants and unsealed in 2003, Homeland Security agent David Kane laid out alleged ties between Arian and IIIT, writing that IIIT was once the largest contributor to what he called a Palestinian Islamic Jihad front group run by Arian. Arian contends that he has no information that could help the investigation and that any ties between him and IIIT are more than a decade old, according to the documents unsealed in Florida. Arian refused to testify in Alexandria on Oct. 19, and his attorneys tried to quash the subpoena. They argued that it violated his plea agreement with Florida prosecutors because Arian made it clear to prosecutors before he agreed to plead guilty that he would not cooperate with the government. A federal judge in Florida rejected that argument last week.” (Idem.)

4. Tragically, al-Arian has been hailed as a hero and political martyr in the so-called progressive political sector. In particular, the Pacifica radio network and its popular “Democracy Now” program have gone to extraordinary lengths to represent this monster as an icon and role model. Al-Arian is the North American head of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the offshoots of the Islamofascist Muslim Brotherhood. Check out the following photo of a Palestinian Islamic Jihad rally. THIS is what the “progressives” are supporting. DON’T EVER FORGET THIS PICTURE [13]!!

5. Sadly, but predictably, the Council on American-Islamic Relations is working on behalf of “Sammy the Aryan”, as Mr. Emory calls al-Arian. Billed as the primary group representing American Muslims, the CAIR has maintained a disturbingly favorable attitude toward Islamic terrorists and Islamofascists. Having the CAIR represent the interests of American Muslims is tantamount to having the German American Bund represent the interests of German Americans. (The German American Bund was a pro-Nazi organization in pre-World War II America, run by the Third Reich. For more about the German American Bund, see this link [14]. For more about CAIR and its terrorist sympathies, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 357 [7], 583 [11].) “The Council on American- Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on American Muslims and other people of conscience to write letters in support of Dr. Sami Al-Arian, a former Florida professor currently on a hunger strike in federal detention to protest his treatment by U.S. authorities. Family members report that Al-Arian collapsed on the 23rd day of his fast and has been moved from Virginia to a medical facility in North Carolina. CAIR asked that letters urging Al-Arian’s release be sent to Judge Gerald Lee of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and President Bush. Al-Arian began his hunger strike more than three weeks ago after being given a sentence of up to 18 months for refusing to testify before a grand jury in Virginia. His attorneys say an earlier plea agreement freed him from further cooperation with the government. Supporters say the government’s actions amount to a form of harassment. . . .”
(“U.S. Muslims Asked to Write in Support of FL Prof on Hunger Strike” [Little Green Footballs]; News.Yahoo.com; 2/15/2007.) [15]

6. Sami al-Arian was close to the GOP power hierarchy. An associate of President Bush, al-Arian was an integral part of the SAAR network, an Islamist/Muslim Brotherhood economic and political milieu. That network, in turn, was deeply involved with the Bush administration and the GOP hierarchy. The Islamic Institute was a vehicle uniting Muslim Brotherhood economic and political influence with GOP power brokers Grover Norquist and Karl Rove, as well as long time Bush advisor and business associate Talat Othman. Yet another Islamist and accused terrorist with ties to the GOP is Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari, a major donor to the Republican Party. (For more about the numerous and profound connections between the Republican Party, the Bush administration and Muslim Brotherhood terrorists associated with Al Qaeda, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 356 [6], 357 [7], 415 [16], 435 [17], 454 [8], 467 [4], 495 [18], 515 [19].) “The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) won’t say what it plans to do with thousands of dollars in campaign donations it received from an accused terror financier. Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari gave $15,250 to the NRCC since 2002, according to FEC records published on the Web site opensecrets.org [20]. On Friday, Alishtari pled not guilty to funding terrorism and other crimes, including financial fraud. The NRCC is the main political group dedicated to helping the Republican Party win seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Reached Monday morning for comment, an NRCC spokeswoman declined to discuss the matter on the record. The indictment against Alishtari unsealed in Manhattan federal court Friday charges him with providing material support to terrorists by transferring $152,000 between banks to allegedly be used to purchase night-vision goggles and other equipment needed for a terrorist training camp. Alishtari, aka Michael Mixon, was paid for his efforts to collect and transfer the funds, which included $25,000 sent from a bank in New York to a bank in Montreal, Canada, the indictment alleges. . . .”
(“Accused Terrorist is Big GOP Donor” by Justin Rood; ABC News Blog; 2/19/2007.) [21]

7. Sadly, the Muslim Brotherhood is being marketed by its defenders as a mainstream, moderate group. One of the so-called moderates is Tariq Ramadan, grandson of the group’s founder Hassan al-Banna. Interestingly (and perhaps significantly), Ramadan has been quite close to the Dalai Lama. (For more on the Dalai Lama’s links to Islamofascism, the CIA and the Underground Reich, see FTR#’s 547 [22], 548 [23], 549 [24], 550 [25]. For more on the fascist ideology and practices of the Muslim Brotherhood, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 455 [26], 456 [27], 473 [28], 537 [29].) For an examination of Hassan al-Banna’s “anti-imperialist” ideology, see link [30].) “ . . . I was also close to the Tibetans and spent one month with the Dalai Lama. It was the same philosophy, spiritual commitment and resistance, in their case against Chinese colonialism. Perhaps because of these personal experiences, I started to read the work of my own grandfather, who used the Scriptures, the story of Moses, against British colonialism. He was saying in the 1940’s what the liberation theologists [sic] were saying in the 1960’s. . . .”
(“Tariq Ramadan Has an Identity Issue” by Ian Buruma; New York Times Magazine; 2/4/2007; p. 39.) [31]

8. Emblematic of both the misrepresentation of Muslim extremists as “moderates” and the altogether inexcusable behavior of a significant minority of Muslims resident in the U.S. is Stanford University’s treatment of a racist, anti-Semitic Turkish film. “Valley of the Wolves: Iraq [32]” portrays American G.I.’s as participating in a conspiracy with Jewish doctors to murder Muslim children and steal their organs. This is a slight reworking of the old “Blood Libel” accusations of Jews engaging in ritual murder that have long characterized cruder anti-Semitic culture. To see this vile movie treated with kid gloves and its virulently racist, hate-mongering represented as not only acceptable, but laudable, exemplifies the extent to which irresponsible American Muslims and the non-Muslim elements that support them have been empowered to spread bigotry. “The Action Movie You Were Not Meant to See: Kurtlar Vadisi Irak (Valley of the Wolves: Iraq): An elite Turkish commando squad infiltrates the Kurdish region of US-occupied Iraq. What they find is too shocking to contemplate: their supposed American allies engaged in murder, extortion, organ dealing, and more. Not in our name indeed. This film was a spin off from a hugely popular Turkish TV series, and went on to be one of the biggest grossing films in all Turkish cinema history. It has also enjoyed great popularity in Europe and the Middle East. It was due for a limited American release in December 2006, but was quietly dropped at the last minute after a letter from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai Br’ith to the film’s US distributors objected to ‘the incendiary anti-Jewish and anti-American themes and characters in the film.’ As a service to the Stanford academic community at large, we offer you the chance to see this important film for yourself. Non-stop screen action, intellectual stimulation, and real political controversy in one program! This is an event not to be missed. Screening at 1pm followed by a discussion after the film.–Cosponsored by: Middle East Collection of the Stanford University Libraries, The Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies, Stanford Continuing Studies. For more information on the film: http://www.valleyofthewolvesiraq.com [33] .”

9. Supplementing discussion from FTR#584, the broadcast notes how the so-called 9/11 “Truth” movement has served as a vehicle for the trafficking of fascist historical revisionism. The broadcast highlights the participation in a recent Arizona 9/11 conference of Holocaust denier Eric Williams. The program also notes that “Dr.” Jim Fetzer (co-founder of 9/11 Scholars for Truth) has defended Eric Hufschmid, one of the worst neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers in the so-called 9/11 “Truth” movement. “Holocaust Denier Eric: Despite statements on 911Accountability.org [34] that Eric D. Williams had “stepped down from involvement in the 9/11 Accountability Conference,” Williams was present today (Friday) at a “press conference” for the opening of the symposium at the Crown Plaza San Marcos in Chandler, and I have been informed that Williams will actually have a vendor booth at the conference on Saturday and Sunday. This is astonishing considering the controversy that’s swirled ’round Williams and the conference since it was revealed that Williams had authored the Holocaust-denying tome The Puzzle of Auschwit [35]z [35], which asserts that there were no killer gas-chambers at Auschwitz, and that there was no Final Solution planned and implemented by the Nazis against European Jews. Because of Williams’ involvement, several speakers dropped out of the conference, including Dylan Avery, the boy-wonder behind Loose Change [36], the one genuine star of the 9/11 conspiracy movement. The fact that the conference, headed by convicted felon Kent ‘Cow Killer’ Knudson, has allowed Williams to participate despite disavowing him in the past and claiming (wrongly) that he had never been the Conference Director, should completely discredit this conference and Knudson, and serve as proof of the conference’s willingness to accept Holocaust-deniers and anti-Semites into their midst. Further demonstrating the movement’s tolerance of anti-Semites was panelist Jim Fetzer’s defense of Eric Hufschmid, whose site Erichufschmid.net is filled with anti-Semitic tripe.”
(“Holocaust Denier Eric D. Williams Attends 9/11 Accountability Conference; Prof. James Fetzer Defends Anti-Semite” by Stephen Lemons; Phoenix New Times Blog; 2/23/2007.) [37]

10. More about Fetzer’s defense of Hufschmid. “In my opinion Eric Hufschmid’s work — his book Painful Questions [38], for example, is an exemplar of excellence in research,’ asserted Fetzer at one point during the media event. ‘He was a pioneer. He tackled this difficult subject. I realize that on various grounds, he’s a controversial guy. That part I’m not addressing.’ This freak Hufschmid argues that ‘Zionists’ pull the strings of white supremacists in the U.S. He also states that: ‘The Jews are lying about the gas chambers and ovens;’ ‘The Jews helped Hitler and the Nazi party get control of Germany;’ ‘The Jews instigated both world wars;’ and ‘The Jews created anti-Semitism in Germany to drive Jews out of Europe and into Palestine, and to unify Jews, and to bring pity to Jews.’ And this dood is ‘an exemplar of excellence’? Hey, don’t hog that tailpipe, Jim, give me a whiff too. . . .” (Idem.)

11. Although not covered in the original broadcast, the program notes that the less-responsible elements in the 9/11 Truth Movement continue to cite a discredited BBC report that incorrectly states that many of the 9/11 hijackers are still alive and living in Saudi Arabia. “ . . . Aware that conspiracy theorists were exploiting the BBC’s original report, BBC editor Steve Herrmann made a post about it this past October on his “Editors” blog [39], seeking to straighten out any confusion: A five-year-old story from our archive has been the subject of some recent editorial discussion here. The story, written in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was about confusion at the time surrounding the names and identities of some of the hijackers. This confusion was widely reported and was also acknowledged by the FBI. The story has been cited ever since by some as evidence that the 9/11 attacks were part of a US government conspiracy. We later reported on the list of hijackers, thereby superseding the earlier report. In the intervening years we have also reported in detail on the investigation into the attacks, the 9/11 commission and its report. We’ve carried the full report, executive summary and main findings and, as part of the recent fifth anniversary coverage, a detailed guide to what’s known about what happened on the day. But conspiracy theories have persisted. The confusion over names and identities we reported back in 2001 may have arisen because these were common Arabic and Islamic names. In an effort to make this clearer, we have made one small change to the original story. Under the FBI picture of Waleed al Shehri we have added the words “A man called Waleed Al Shehri…” to make it as clear as possible that there was confusion over the identity. The rest of the story remains as it was in the archive as a record of the situation at the time. We recently asked the FBI for a statement, and this is, as things stand, the closest thing we have to a definitive view: The FBI is confident that it has positively identified the nineteen hijackers responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Also, the 9/11 investigation was thoroughly reviewed by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and the House and Senate Joint Inquiry. Neither of these reviews ever raised the issue of doubt about the identity of the nineteen hijackers. . . .

12. Next, the program highlights an Indian intelligence finding that Islamist terrorists are manipulating stock markets in order to generate money. Indeed, 9/11 itself appears to have been used by some conspirators to make a great deal of money by “selling short.” (For more about the manipulation of capital markets in connection with 9/11, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 327 [41], 411 [42].) “Manipulation of stock exchanges is the new modus operandi used by terrorist groups to raise funds for their operations and fictitious companies have operated in the Mumbai and Chennai stock exchanges. Revealing this, National Security Advisor M K Narayanan has said some of these companies were later traced to terrorist groups. ‘Isolated instances of terrorist outfits manipulating the stock markets to raise funds for their operations have been reported. Stock exchanges in Mumbai and Chennai have, on occasions, reported that fictitious or notional companies were engaging in stock market operations,’ he said while addressing the 43rd Conference on Security Policy in Munich last week. Calling for the lifting of banking secrecy and the corporate veil in terrorist-related cases, he said security agencies had detected many instances of funds received via banking channels from so-called safe locations like Dubai and UAE that were intended for terrorist groups. Squarely blaming certain ‘official agencies’ in Pakistan for pumping millions of dollars for militancy in India, he said jehadi groups had started to establish a network of legitimate businesses to fund their activities. . . .”

13. Concluding with discussion of the Carl Duisberg Society, the program presents an e‑mail from a listener alleging that the CDS has been involved with anthrax research in the United States. The CDS appears to have sponsored 9/11 hijacker Mohamed Atta’s entry into Germany and [perhaps] the United States. (For more about the CDS and Atta, see—among other programs—FTR#’s 477 [43], 530 [44], 533 [45], 536 [46]. For more about the anthrax attacks, see—among other programs—FTR#419 [47].)

“I was very interested to see your analysis of the link between the Carl Duisberg Society and Muhammed Atta. I see that it was last October, but I only recently read it. I would like to point out that the CDS connection provides the first viable link between Atta and the anthrax industry, which seemed anxious to take advantage of the terror attack. The CDS works closely with Fraunhofer Gesselshaft and Fraunhofer USA which are German national ‘dual use technology’ laboratories. They are currently working on anthrax detection anthrax vaccines, now at American expense as a result of the ‘organizational ability’ of Carl Steiner, himself a CDS alumni and credited with bringing Fraunhofer to the campus of the University of Delaware. You can easily Google search Fraunhofer and anthrax to discover that the Delaware senators have arranged funding for sensitive technology that bypasses the usual channels for procurement of such wares. If you have questions, please feel free to ask.”

14. Supplementing the assertions cited by the correspondent, this description offers information about Karl Steiner. Alleged by the above correspondent to be the man who precipitated the Fraunhofer/CDS/Delaware relationship. Note the role of the Carl Duisberg Society in his curriculum vitae. “Karl V. Steiner has been named associate director of the Delaware Biotechnology Institute (DBI) effective Jan. 1. Steiner will be working closely with David S. Weir, DBI director, to position the institute as a center of excellence in biotechnology and the life sciences. Under the leadership of Weir, the institute has grown to become a $75 million statewide initiative. Steiner joined UD in 1984 as a visiting researcher under a fellowship from the German Carl Duisberg Society. Before to his current position, he held several managerial positions at CCM, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in October. CCM is UD’s largest interdisciplinary engineering research center, with more than $5 million in contracts and grants a year. From 1996–98, Steiner also served as the founding executive director of the Fraunhofer Center—Delaware, one of Delaware’s three initial Advanced Technology Centers under the state’s 21st Century initiative....
