FTR#1288 This program was recorded in one, 60-minute segment.
Introduction: This broadcast continues our visits with Jim DiEugenio–author of Destiny Betrayed and JFK Revisited–selected by Oliver Stone to write the screenplay for his latest documentary.
The program tackles an evidentiary element that disproves the Warren Commission thesis: the story of Victoria Adams—“The Girl on The Stairs.”
1.–Elements of discussion and analysis include: The Warren Commission’s problem of establishing Oswald’s presence on the sixth floor of The Texas School Book Depository at the time of the shooting; The Commission’s use of two witnesses to establish that; Author Sylvia Meagher’s discreditation of one of those witnesses (Charles Givens) in a 1971 article; The curious fact the other witness (Howard Brennan) could give Oswald’s height and weight but couldn’t identify Oswald in a police lineup, nor could he accurately describe the window from which Oswald allegedly fired; Researcher Barry Ernst undertook an ultimately successful years-long search for Adams, a graduate of Presentation High School in San Francisco; Oswald was supposedly seen by Dallas Police officer Marion Baker and Oswald’s supervisor Roy Truly drinking a coke in a lunch room in the Texas School Book Depository; Review of the ARRB’s Douglas Horne and his discovery that Truly was not being paid by the financial authorities of the Texas School Book Depository building; Vicki Adams started down the stairs within 15–30 seconds of the shooting and took 60 seconds to get down those stairs; Warren Commission says she was mistaken and didn’t start down the stairs until later; TSBD employees Shelley and Billy Lovelady were standing in first floor entrance, departed for railroad tracks in back of the grassy knoll and returned; Warren Commission says Adams was at the ground floor only to see them return; Warren Commission counsel David Belin’s deliberate distortion of Admas’ account: Belin’s refusal to let her participate in re-enactment; Belin wouldn’t interview Sandra Styles, who corroborated Adams account (neither Styles nor Adams saw Shelley, Lovelady on the ground floor); according to Barry Ernst the Warren Commission destroyed the stenographer’s tape of Adams testimony, which supported what she told Belin; U.S. Attorney Martha Jo Stroud’s letter to Commission counsel J. Lee Rankin buttressing Adams’ account: TSBD employee Elsie Dorman was filming motorcade and could confirm Adams’ account; Dorothy Garner supported what Adams said about Truly and Baker coming up stairs and Lovelady and Shelley not having returned from tracks (p. 117 of JFK Revisited); Warren Commission’s concealment Stroud document; Dallas Police show up on Adams’ doorstep when no one knew where her new apartment was (p. 241 of JFK Revisited); DPD said they had to interview her again, because there was a fire that destroyed her previous interview; Adams was scared by this; Dallas PD was no longer involved in investigation at that point in time; The documentary record of Adams’ DPD testimony differs from her previous testimony—she claims she never saw Shelley and Lovelady, unlike her testimony—she felt those words had been inserted into her testimony to disprove it; Shelley’s and Lovelady’s testimony support Adams’ account, though Lovelady’s is vague; Recapping a major point–four women—Adams, Styles, Dorman, Garner presented a consistent account (at variance with the Warren Commission’s thesis) and Belin only wants Adams and her testimony is distorted in the official record.
2.–We mention General Roy Byrd and his ownership of Texas School Book Depository and his founding of the Civil Air Patrol (which was a point of meeting for Oswald and David Ferrie); Byrd’s purchase of Ling Temco Vought stock prior to assassination, which then appreciated exponentially because of the Vietnam war, which JFK was working to prevent.
