COMMENT: On Fri­day, July 3^rd, Dave pre­sent­ed his first month­ly talk for July. Tack­ling the dif­fi­cult sub­ject of the his­to­ry of anti-Semi­tism, Zion­ism and fas­cism, Mr. Emory set forth the his­to­ry of the pro­found fas­cist com­po­nent in the Zion­ist move­ment and its elec­toral ascent under Men­achem Begin.

After detail­ing the huge emi­gra­tion from Czarist Rus­sia dri­ven by doc­tri­naire anti-Semi­tism and gov­ern­ment-sanc­tioned pogroms, Mr. Emory reviewed the coa­les­cence of the fas­cist Betar in the 1920s and its col­lab­o­ra­tion with Mus­soli­ni. (The Betar was head­ed by Vladimir Jabotin­sky, whose per­son­al sec­re­tary, as well as a pall­bear­er at his funer­al, was Ben­zion Netanyahu, the father of, and polit­i­cal men­tor to, Ben­jamin Netanyahu.)

After not­ing Albert Einstein’s 1948 let­ter to The New York Times warn­ing of the fas­cism of Men­achem Begin’s polit­i­cal par­ty and its vio­lence toward Jew­ish labor unions and indi­vid­u­als opposed to its poli­cies, Mr. Emory relates the piv­otal his­tor­i­cal and polit­i­cal dynam­ic of the Mizrachi.

Sephardic Jews, the Mizrachi were eth­ni­cal­ly-cleansed from Arab coun­tries fol­low­ing the estab­lish­ment of Israel and eco­nom­i­cal­ly dis­pos­sessed.

Fierce­ly anti-Arab, the Mizrachi expe­ri­enced insti­tu­tion­al­ized dis­crim­i­na­tion from the Ashke­nazi elite in Israel. (The Ashke­nazi are Jews of Euro­pean extrac­tion; the Mizrachi are Sephardic Jews, of Mid­dle-East­ern extrac­tion.)

Suc­cess­ful­ly mobi­liz­ing the anti-Arab and anti-Ashke­nazi sen­ti­ments of the Mizrachi, Begin rode that suc­cess to tri­umph in the elec­tions of 1977. That tac­tic is essen­tial­ly the same as that used by Don­ald Trump in using resent­ment of “elites” and resent­ment of “for­eign­ers” to mobi­lize work­ing-class vot­ers to act against their own eco­nom­ic inter­ests.

The Mizrachi remain a pow­er­ful ele­ment in the Likud polit­i­cal strat­e­gy.

Mr. Emory reviews the fun­da­men­tal impor­tance of the “Bor­mann Jews” in under­stand­ing the real­i­ty of the Mid­dle East.
