“Anti-Nazi hero” Pas­tor Mar­tin Niemoller was not opposed to Hitler on prin­ci­ple. An ear­ly Nazi, his oppo­si­tion was tech­ni­cal and seen as qual­i­fy­ing him as a pos­si­ble “kinder, gen­tler Fuehrer,” thus enabling post­war per­pet­u­a­tion of Nazi pow­er struc­ture.
