Ramsey Clark: Godfather of CIA’s CHAOS and FBI’s COINTELPRO Programs

For decades, we have point­ed out the doc­u­ment­ed fact that much of the so-called pro­gres­sive sec­tor drools and slob­bers over a great many obvi­ous, heinous wolves-in-sheep­’s cloth­ing. One of those is for­mer Attor­ney Gen­er­al of the Unit­ed States Ram­sey Clark, who con­tin­ues to enjoy a rep­u­ta­tion as a liberal/progressive icon. Noth­ing could be fur­ther from the truth. In addi­tion to cov­er­ing up the assas­si­na­tions of both Mar­tin Luther King and Robert Kennedy–whose mur­ders occurred dur­ing his tenure as A.G.–Clark frus­trat­ed New Orleans Dis­trict Attor­ney Jim Gar­rison’s inves­ti­ga­tion of the JFK assas­si­na­tion. He also mid-wived the evo­lu­tion of our present-day counter-ter­ror­ism insti­tu­tions. ” . . . . Ram­sey Clark, formed the Inter­de­part­men­tal Intel­li­gence Unit (IDIU) with­in the Depart­ment of Jus­tice. The IDI­U’s job was to coor­di­nate the ele­ments of the CIA, FBI and mil­i­tary that were inves­ti­gat­ing dis­senters. . . . The Phoenix pro­gram was cre­at­ed simul­ta­ne­ous­ly in 1967 and did the same thing in Viet­nam; it brought togeth­er 25 agen­cies and aimed them at civil­ians in the insur­gency. . . . Start­ing in 1967, White House polit­i­cal cadres, through the IDIU in the Jus­tice Depart­ment, coor­di­nat­ed the CIA’s Chaos pro­gram, the FBI’s COINTELPRO Pro­gram, and the mil­i­tary’s domes­tic spy­ing pro­grams. . . .”

Con­tin­u­ing analy­sis of the intel­li­gence com­mu­ni­ty’s mind con­trol pro­grams, this broad­cast details one of the most insid­i­ous appli­ca­tions of the mind con­trol discipline–the pro­gram­ming of entire new per­son­al­i­ties into peo­ple, which could only become oper­a­tional after a pre-con­di­tioned cue was admin­is­tered.

The pro­gram begins with dis­cus­sion of the use of hyp­no­sis to enable mil­i­tary and intel­li­gence couri­ers to com­mit large amounts of infor­ma­tion to mem­o­ry in such a man­ner as to pre­vent dis­clo­sure when the sub­ject was not hyp­no­tized.

One of the CIA’s mind con­trol couri­ers was a famous mod­el and World War II pin-up girl named Can­dy Jones.

Ms. Jones–one of Amer­i­ca’s pre­mier mod­els, a polit­i­cal lib­er­al and the wife of broad­cast­ing leg­end Long John Nebel–was sub­ject­ed to a rig­or­ous mind con­trol pro­gram in which a big­ot­ed, fas­cist per­son­al­i­ty was pro­grammed into her under the alter­nate per­son­al­i­ty Arlene Grant.

Ms. Jones was con­di­tioned to hate blacks, Jews and oth­ers, via a per­son­al­i­ty con­di­tioned into her by a pro­gram­mer. After mar­ry­ing Nebel, a lib­er­al, Ms. Jones was appar­ent­ly pro­grammed to kill her­self, throw­ing her­self off a cliff in the Bahamas.

Of par­tic­u­lar note is the sex­u­al­ly-charged, anti-black racism with which Ms. Jones–as “Arlene Grant”–was imbued. Against the con­tem­po­rary polit­i­cal back­drop, this is espe­cial­ly sig­nif­i­cant.

The bal­ance of the dis­cus­sion is a hypo­thet­i­cal “pre­quel” to dis­cus­sion of the Peo­ples Tem­ple of Jim Jones. With riots in many of this coun­try’s urban ghet­tos in the 1960’s and vio­lent acts by so-called “black mil­i­tants” gar­ner­ing sig­nif­i­cant head­lines in the 1960’s and 1970’s, there was sup­port in the intel­li­gence and applied psy­chol­o­gy fields to study the social behav­ior and psy­chol­o­gy of African-Amer­i­cans. Par­tic­u­lar empha­sis was on study­ing the brains of black peo­ple, to see if there was some innate incli­na­tion toward vio­lent behav­ior on the part of a sig­nif­i­cant por­tion of the African-Amer­i­can com­mu­ni­ty.

The Nixon admin­is­tra­tion and the Cal­i­for­nia guber­na­to­r­i­al reg­is­tra­tion of Ronald Rea­gan were sup­port­ive of the project, with the Law Enforce­ment Assis­tance Admin­is­tra­tion enlist­ed to help finance the project, for which an aban­doned Nike mis­sile base was to be req­ui­si­tioned as an oper­a­tional cen­ter.

CIA psy­chol­o­gist Louis Joly­on West was one of the prime movers in the appar­ent­ly abort­ed launch­ing of the UCLA Insti­tute for the Study and Pre­ven­tion of Vio­lence. (West had been Jack Ruby’s psy­chi­a­trist, as well as an ear­ly exper­i­menter on the effects of LSD.) In our next pro­gram, we exam­ine the pos­si­bil­i­ty that the UCLA cen­ter was actu­al­ly sup­plant­ed with the Peo­ples Tem­ple of Jim Jones, an appar­ent CIA oper­a­tion and exten­sion of the intel­li­gence com­mu­ni­ty’s mind con­trol oper­a­tions.
