FTR #893 Interview with Robert Parry about Ukraine

Return­ing to our air­waves for the first time in sev­er­al years, award-win­ning jour­nal­ist Robert Par­ry high­lights some of his research on the Ukrain­ian cri­sis. After dis­cussing Russ­ian pres­i­dent Putin’s ban­ning of for­eign-based NGO’s from oper­at­ing in Rus­sia, Robert notes the role of the Nation­al Endow­ment of Democ­ra­cy in orches­trat­ing the Ukraine coup, as well as the orga­ni­za­tion’s evo­lu­tion from William Casey’s CIA.

High­light­ing Amer­i­can jour­nal­ists’ unwill­ing­ness to call the Maid­an events as what they obvi­ous­ly were–a coup–Robert sets forth Assis­tant Sec­re­tary of State Vic­to­ria Nuland’s plot­ting with the Amer­i­can ambas­sador to Ukraine and her dis­cus­sion of a $5 bil­lion cap­i­tal invest­ment the U.S. had made in Ukraine.

After review­ing the World War II fas­cist her­itage of orga­ni­za­tions like Svo­bo­da and Pravy Sek­tor, Robert sets forth the deep involve­ment of those orga­ni­za­tions in the Maid­an events, as well as the “point” posi­tion of Nazi ele­ments like the Azov bat­tal­ion in the con­flict in Ukraine’s East­ern regions.

One of the most impor­tant top­ics of dis­cus­sion is the Orwellian nature of the cov­er­age of events in Ukraine. FTR #891 How Might Colonel L. Fletcher Prouty Have Viewed Edward Snowden? (The Foxes Aren’t Guarding the Henhouse, They ARE the Henhouse, Part 2: Update on the Adventures of Eddie the Friendly Spook)

One of the most inci­sive crit­ics of the CIA was the late [U.S. Air Force] Colonel L. Fletch­er Prouty. Cho­sen by Allen Dulles to set up “focal point” func­tions for CIA with­in oth­er agen­cies of the U.S. gov­ern­ment, Prouty was instru­men­tal in the cre­ation of what he called a “Secret Team”–the title of his 1969 book about “The Agency.” Dulles’ secret net­work infil­trat­ed the mil­i­tary, the State Depart­ment, the FAA and even the White House. Look­ing at CIA offi­cer Edward Snow­den’s activ­i­ties, Prouty would NOT have tak­en them at face val­ue and would have seen them against the back­ground of the sub-rosa activ­i­ties with which he was famil­iar and had helped cre­ate, weigh­ing the pos­si­bil­i­ty that Snow­den was oper­at­ing against NSA on behalf of CIA. Much of the pro­gram details the sab­o­tage of Fran­cis Gary Pow­ers’ U‑2 spy plane in 1960 on the eve of a sum­mit con­fer­ence between then U.S. Pres­i­dent Dwight Eisen­how­er and Sovi­et Pre­mier Niki­ta Khr­uschev. Dis­patched against the spe­cif­ic orders of Dwight Eisen­how­er, the U‑2 appears to have been delib­er­ate­ly sab­o­taged. The inci­dent led to the can­cel­la­tion of the sum­mit con­fer­ence and the neu­tral­iza­tion of detente between the Sovi­et Union and the Unit­ed States. Prouty would have not­ed that Edward Snow­den was work­ing for the CIA when he under­took his leak­ing oper­a­tion. Prouty would also have not­ed Snow­den’s extreme right-wing views and would not have tak­en his activ­i­ties at face val­ue. Snow­den’s jour­ney to Hong Kong frus­trat­ed Pres­i­dent Oba­ma’s attempts at resolv­ing U.S. and Chi­nese elec­tron­ic spy­ing and hack­ing. Snow­den’s Chi­na sojourn also antic­i­pat­ed U.S. mil­i­tary and eco­nom­ic pres­sure on Chi­na. Snow­den’s jour­ney from Chi­na to Rus­sia led to the can­cel­la­tion of a sum­mit con­fer­ence between Oba­ma and Putin and end­ed the Oba­ma admin­is­tra­tion’s “reboot with Rus­sia.” The Snow­den “op” pre­ced­ed the Maid­an covert oper­a­tion and atten­dant Ukrain­ian civ­il war, as well as West­ern eco­nom­ic pres­sure on Rus­sia. As a trained intel­li­gence offi­cer, Prouty would have not­ed that the 1.7 mil­lion doc­u­ments (2.7 mil­lion by some accounts) pur­loined by Snow­den fun­da­men­tal­ly com­pro­mised NSA, per­haps to pre­vent whis­tle-blow­ing on CIA use of Mus­lim Broth­er­hood-relat­ed Islamists as proxy war­riors and her­alds of cor­po­ratist eco­nom­ics in what Mr. Emory calls “The Earth Island Boo­gie.” The pro­gram con­cludes with dis­cus­sion of the intel­li­gence con­nec­tions of the very pri­va­cy activists who are sup­pos­ed­ly opposed to U.S. gov­ern­ment elec­tron­ic sur­veil­lance. Ana­lyz­ing the pos­si­bil­i­ty that Amer­i­can use of Mus­lim Broth­er­hood Islamists as proxy war­riors and armed her­alds of cor­po­ratist free-mar­ket eco­nom­ic val­ues might back­fire on the Unit­ed States, we look at the devel­op­ment of ISIS, the curi­ous Turk­ish about-face on the Fetul­lah Gulen orga­ni­za­tion and fall­out from the so-called “Arab Spring.” Begin­ning with dis­cus­sion of a “dooms­day” con­tin­gency plan con­coct­ed by al-Qae­da and Sad­dam Hus­sein to back each oth­er up mil­i­tar­i­ly in the event either or both were over­thrown by the U.S., we exam­ine the promi­nent role of for­mer mem­bers of Sad­dam’s offi­cer corps in admin­is­ter­ing ISIS.
