FTR #868: The Assassination of Olof Palme, Part 1

The first of two pro­grams high­light­ing the unsolved 1986 assas­si­na­tion of Swedish Prime Min­is­ter Olof Palme, the broad­cast fea­tures a 1988 arti­cle by the bril­liant free­lance Dan­ish jour­nal­ist Hen­rik Kruger, author of “The Great Hero­in Coup: Drugs, Intel­li­gence and Inter­na­tion­al Fas­cism.” Through this exam­i­na­tion of the inter­sect­ed net­works that Kruger has termed (in “The Great Hero­in Coup”) “The Inter­na­tion­al Fascista,” we are able to observe the ele­ments of Oper­a­tion Con­dor, key indi­vid­u­als and insti­tu­tions com­pris­ing the for­mer World Anti-Com­mu­nist League, indi­vid­u­als and orga­ni­za­tions under­ly­ing “the Strat­e­gy of Ten­sion” in Italy, as well as the cast of char­ac­ters that man­aged the Iran-Con­tra machi­na­tions. Long the focal point of death threats and assas­si­na­tion attempts, Palme had earned the lethal ire of fas­cists in North and South Amer­i­ca, as well as Europe. The fail­ure to solve the killing, despite the pas­sage of almost 30 years and some very strong evi­den­tiary trib­u­taries, under­scores the grav­i­tas of the forces that destroyed Palme. Kruger’s arti­cle also serves as some­thing of an “in vit­ro” win­dow into many of the polit­i­cal net­works we have exam­ined over the years.

In our ongo­ing series of inter­views with Peter Lev­en­da, the author of “The Hitler Lega­cy,” we have high­light­ed points of dis­cus­sion relat­ing to WACL, Oper­a­tion Con­dor, the Iran/Contra scan­dal and oth­er ele­ments that might not be famil­iar to recent/younger read­ers and lis­ten­ers. Peter detailed his hair-rais­ing vis­it to Colo­nia Dig­nidad in FTR #839. Grand­son of the Japan­ese war crim­i­nal who signed that coun­try’s dec­la­ra­tion of war against the U.S., Shin­zo Abe is fol­low­ing in the foot­steps of Nobo­suke Kishi (his grand­fa­ther), as well as those of Kishi’s asso­ciates in Japan’s expan­sion­ist empire. Revis­ing school text­books about World War II, pass­ing a new secre­cy law, insti­tut­ing greater state con­trol of news media, dra­mat­i­cal­ly increas­ing defense spend­ing while mov­ing to alter the con­sti­tu­tion to per­mit a more mil­i­taris­tic agen­da, Abe is turn­ing back the Japan­ese his­tor­i­cal and polit­i­cal clock. Japan­ese gov­ern­ment offi­cials are open­ly sanc­tion­ing anti-Kore­an racism and net­work­ing with orga­ni­za­tions that pro­mote that doc­trine. Sev­er­al mem­bers of Abe’s gov­ern­ment net­work with Japan­ese neo-Nazis. Vice-Prime Min­is­ter Taro Aso is a long­time admir­er of Nazi polit­i­cal strat­e­gy and advo­cates using the Nazi method for seiz­ing pow­er to sneak con­sti­tu­tion­al change past the Japan­ese pub­lic.


Were there Nazis in Atlantis? The Gospel According to Ramtha (aka J.Z. Knight)

J.Z. Knight (right) has built a suc­cess­ful orga­ni­za­tion by claim­ing to chan­nel an ancient “Atlantean/Lemurian” War­rior named Ramtha. In addi­tion to lubri­cat­ing the spir­i­tu­al cog­ni­tion of her acolytes with copi­ous amounts of wine, Knight/Ramtha has dis­sem­i­nat­ed pro­found­ly dis­parag­ing views of var­i­ous groups, includ­ing gays, Mex­i­cans, Jews and organ­ic farm­ers. Knight/Ramtha’s views have found res­o­nance on the Storm­front web­site, arguably the lead­ing neo-Nazi and white suprema­cist web­site.

Updat­ing and intro­duc­ing a num­ber of sto­ries, this pro­gram notes the death of Nazi art deal­er Cor­nelius Gurlitt, high­light­ed in FTR #791. After detail­ing the back­ground and polit­i­cal con­nec­tions of Fra­zier Glenn Miller, accused of killing three peo­ple at a Jew­ish Com­mu­ni­ty Cen­ter in Kansas, the pro­gram high­lights the grow­ing con­trol of Amer­i­can media out­lets by doc­tri­naire fas­cist orga­ni­za­tions with a her­itage evolv­ing from World War II. In addi­tion to the spec­tac­u­lar growth of pub­lish­ing giant Ber­tels­mann, with a Nazi and SS her­itage, the broad­cast under­scores the con­trol of the Al-Jazeera net­work by the Mus­lim Broth­er­hood. The curi­ous adver­tis­ing behav­ior of BMW, con­trolled by the heirs of Joseph Goebbels is set forth, as well.


Newsweek Publisher Has Unification Church Background

In FTR #291, we exam­ined the Uni­fi­ca­tion Church as an exten­sion of the Japan­ese Patri­ot­ic Soci­eties, that brought fas­cism to Japan through a pro­gram of polit­i­cal assas­si­na­tion and pro­pa­gan­da. David Jang, whose busi­ness enter­pris­es con­trol both Newsweek and The Inter­na­tion­al Busi­ness Times, has a back­ground in the Uni­fi­ca­tion Church, for­mer­ly head­ed by the Rev­erend Sun Myung Moon.

In his sec­ond stint as Prime Min­is­ter of Japan, Shin­zo Abe is reboot­ing the right-wing polit­i­cal agen­da he pur­sued dur­ing his first term in the last decade. The grand­son of promi­nent Japan­ese war crim­i­nal Nobo­suke Kishi, Abe is imple­ment­ing revi­sion­ist pol­i­tics designed to obfus­cate Japan’s actions dur­ing World War II, includ­ing edit­ing text­books to change writ­ten his­to­ry of the war, imple­ment­ing a new secre­cy law, bring the respect­ed NHK tele­vi­sion net­work under gov­ern­ment con­trol and negat­ing accounts of Japan­ese war crimes.

In numer­ous broad­casts, we have cov­ered the sad real­i­ty that in post World War II Japan, the pub­lic per­cep­tion that the forces of fas­cism were erad­i­cat­ed is a delib­er­ate­ly cul­ti­vat­ed polit­i­cal myth. Japan­ese prime min­is­ter Abe has embarked on a pro­gram of mil­i­tarism, with one of his top defense advis­ers high­light­ing a cam­paign appear­ance by read­ing from the diary of a Kamikaze pilot, who died crash­ing his plane into an Amer­i­can war­ship. Winds of War Blowing over Northern Pacific Islands?

There has been a sig­nif­i­cant uptick in real or alleged mil­i­tary con­fronta­tions over dis­put­ed islands in the North Pacif­ic. Con­ser­v­a­tive com­men­ta­tor Ambrose Evans-Pritchard has not­ed the pos­si­ble drift toward war between Japan and Chi­na over unin­hib­it­ed and dis­put­ed Islands. Japan has also accused Rus­sia of foment­ing con­fronta­tion over the dis­put­ed Kuriles.


Now, About those School Yard Shootings . . .

With the nation and much of the world focused on the grue­some shoot­ings in New­town, Con­nect­cut, we revis­it the top­ic of the school­yard shoot­ings. In past pro­grams, we have not­ed that a num­ber of the [alleged] per­pe­tra­tors of the school shoot­ings have links to Nazi and white suprema­cist groups. A form of ter­ror­ism, these mas­sacres desta­bi­lize soci­ety, lead­ing to the pop­u­lar sen­ti­ment for “order.” Endorsed by some ele­ments of pop­u­lar cul­ture, the school­yard shoot­ings are func­tion­ing in a man­ner anal­o­gous to the Fritz Haar­mann inci­dent in Weimar Ger­many. That ser­i­al mur­der of more than a hun­dred juve­niles, whose corpses were butchered and baked into meat pies, dis­cred­it­ed the author­i­ties of Weimar Ger­many, help­ing to sow sen­ti­ment that would ben­e­fit the Nazis.
